Several times a month I receive a call from a mother needing to increase her milk supply wondering if acupuncture can help. Acupuncture can help improve and increase the supply and flow of milk as well as treat mastitis,”mother arm” (arm and shoulder pain from holding the baby for long periods of time), and postpartum depression. One of my favorite books outlining nutritional to support for postpartum health is called “The First 40 Days, The Essential Art f Nourishing the New Mother” by Heng Ou. The book is full of delicious recipes as well as advice on how to nourish a new mother emotionally and physically (consider freezing meals for your expecting mother). Another tool that can be used at home are “Ear Seeds“, these tiny seed are placed on specific acupuncture points located on the ear and encourage lactation as well as treat postpartum issues.
